Kate Griffiths LBIPPChoosing a portrait photographer

Rather than just turning up at the portrait photography studio for the shoot, it is a good idea to discuss what you are looking for with the photographer in advance.  Here are a few elements to consider when choosing your photographer:

- Is the photographer professionally qualified?

Look for the letters LBIPP, ABIPP or FBIPP after the photographer's name.
These are indications of BIPP qualifications.   Each level reflects an increasing level of experience, skill and achievement, starting with LBIPP and finishing with FBIPP.

- What style of photographs and type of portrait experience are you looking for?

You may prefer contemporary portrait photography or more formal shots.   If you are looking for outdoor portrait photography ask your photographer what settings can be used as many photographers are happy to use various outdoor locations or your own home.  Take along some examples of photograph styles you like.

- Do any particular colours work better than others in the photos?

Neutral coloured clothing is thought to work best rather than very vivid colours.

- Useful things to remember when photographing children

  • Take along your child's favourite toy to help them feel secure and bring out the best of them for the photo
  • Make sure the time of the shoot fits in well with your baby or toddler's routine so they are not tired or hungry during the shoot
  • Tell your children about the portrait sitting beforehand so they know what to expect
