Martin Stewart LBIPP used to be an academic economist. In order to keep the analytic right side of his brain in balance, he exercised the creative left side by developing an interest in photography! Eventually, he made the switch to being a full-time photographer. He went back to college and retrained, focusing primarily on architecture and interiors.
When Martin was assisting, he worked for photographers who were at the top of their game, and learnt all the technical and creative techniques for making buildings and interiors look their best. His background in business and economics also geared him towards making images that have a definite market or purpose. "I'd say that these are the two foundation stones for how I work today and the type of images I create."
Martin's photography naturally evolves with every shoot as he always tries to push the envelope to keep things fresh and interesting for both himself and his clients. "Every time a client is pleased with a shoot, it is a little highlight. It is very important the client is 100% happy, so I always ask to make sure!" Today his client base includes companies from a wide array of sectors, including property development, home improvement, interior design and heritage/conservation.
Martin's advice to anyone starting out is to assist as many different photographers as possible, soak up all the information and training they give you and then go and shoot plenty yourself and keep shooting till things 'click' in your head. The training and networking opportunities in the BIPP have also been useful to Martin throughout the years. "Furthermore, one of my best and longest-standing clients came to me via the BIPP photographer's listings."
